Thanksgiving 2011 is right on the corner. How do you plan to spend this happy Thanksgiving Day holidays? After having the turkey feast with your family with the Thanksgiving songs filled around in the air, it would be great pleasure to watch these Thanksgiving movies too. Different to Christmas movies which are somehow religious or Halloween movies which are scary or spooky, the Thanksgiving movies tends to be happy and joyful. Here are the top 10 Thanksgiving movies that will make you a little more thankful for your own Thanksgiving Day.


1. Alice’s Restaurant (1969)

Alice’s Restaurant

Guthrie and his friend Richard Robbins, 19, were arrested by Stockbridge police officer William for illegally dumping some of Alice’s garbage after discovering that the town dump was closed for the holiday. Two days later, they pled guilty in court before a blind judge, James E. Hannon. The song describes to ironic effect the arresting officer’s frustration at this “typical case of American blind justice”.

Hannah and Her Sisters is a 1986 American comedy-drama film which tells the intertwined stories of an extended family over two years that begin and end with a family Thanksgiving dinner. The story is told in three main arcs, with almost all of it occurring during a 12-month period beginning and ending at Thanksgiving parties hosted by Hannah and her husband, Elliot.




3. Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)

It is a 1987 American comedy film released by Paramount Pictures. Neal Page, a high-strung advertising executive, who meets John Candy, a sunny, talkative, but accident-prone shower curtain ring salesman. They share a two-day odyssey of misadventures trying to get Neal home to Chicago from New York in time for Thanksgiving dinner.

Dutch (released in the UK and Australia as Driving Me Crazy) is a 1991 American comedy-drama film directed by Peter Faiman and written by John Hughes. A rich kid learns about life in the real world when his divorced mom’s beau drives him home for Thanksgiving.




5. Home for the Holidays (1995)

Home for the Holidays

Claudia Larson is a single mom who has just been fired from her job. She flies to spend Thanksgiving at the home of her parents while her only child Kitt decides to stay and spend the holiday with her boyfriend. After the Thanksgiving, her gay brother married Jack and she boards a plane home, Leo goes with her.




6. The War at Home (1996)

The War at Home

A Thanksgiving movie where there is no comic relief. Emilio Estevez portrays a returning Vietnam War hero who can’t adjust to life back home, and the movie’s climatic moment occurs over Thanksgiving dinner as he confronts his father who wouldn’t help him escape the draft. It’s a powerful moment in a powerful movie that will make you thankful that those dark days in our history are over.




7. The Ice Storm (1997)

The Ice Storm is a 1997 drama film directed by Ang Lee, based on the 1994 novel of the same name by Rick Moody. In the weekend after thanksgiving 1973 the Hoods are skidding out of control. Then an ice storm hits, the worst in a century. Things get bad…




8. The House of Yes (1997)

The House of Yes

A wealthy young man wants to wed a painfully ordinary girl, and a few hours with his family will convince anyone why he’s doing so in this black comedy. Marty Pascal is engaged to marry Lesly, a dizzy blonde he met when she was working at a doughnut shop, and he bravely decides that it’s time she met his family, so he brings her along for Thanksgiving dinner at his mother’s house in West Virginia.




9. Tadpole (2002)

In this odd, Voltaire-ridden coming of age story, we follow a young man in his quest to sleep with his stepmother. It’s not a perfect film, it’s lacking visually and some of the dialogue falls flat, but it is hilarious when it wants to be and Bebe Neuwirth is awe-inspiring both in her comic timing and sex appeal.




10. Pieces of April (2003)

April Burns, the eldest daughter in a highly dysfunctional family, lives in a small tenement apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with her boyfriend Bobby. Although estranged from her family, she opts to invite them for Thanksgiving dinner, probably the last for her mother Joy, who has breast cancer.
