World AIDS Day, observed December 1 each year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. “Universal Access and Human Rights” is the World AIDS Day Theme of 2009 and 2010.

According to UNAIDS 2009 report, worldwide some 60 million people have been infected, with some 25 million deaths, and 14 million orphaned children in southern Africa alone since the epidemic began.

Although treatments for AIDS and HIV can slow the course of the disease, there is no known cure or vaccine. As a result, preventing infection is a key aim in controlling the AIDS pandemic.

What’s important, AIDS patients cannot get away from the concert and the support of the whole society. Some people even came up with a question to everyone to complete the sentence: “AIDS ends when ____ begins.”

And the answers include but not are not limited to Acknowledge, Belief, Vaccine, Nutrition, Activism, Urgency, Support, Protection, Caution, Empowerment, Ownership, Compassion, Remembering, Listening, Forward-thinking, Contraception, Freedom, Health, Testing, Cure, Openness, Community, Change, Awareness, Legislation, Cooperation, Funding, Tomorrow, Love Partnership, Non-discrimination, Justice, Forgiveness, Advocacy, Communication, Transcendence, Embracing, Speaking, Ministry, Wellness, Knowledge, Courage, Monogamy, Faith, Friendship, Capacity, Honesty, Care, Education and etc.

Feel free to add a comment with your own answer to “AIDS ends when ___ begins.”

Though great progress has been made in the last 20 years, we still have a long way to go in creating awareness, preventing transmission, treating, and caring for those who are affected by the HIV virus.
