Miss Universe 2010, the 59th edition of the pageant, was held at Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. on August 23, 2010. Jimena Navarrete from Mexico was crowned by her predecessor Stefanía Fernández, the titleholder of Miss Uninvrse 2009 from Venezuela, at the end of this event.
The runner-ups of the newly-elected Miss Universe are Yendi Phillipps from Jamaica, the Miss Congeniality title owner Jesinta Campbell from Australia, Anna Poslavska from Ukraine and Venus Rai from Philippines.
Miss Universe, founded in 1952 by California clothing company Pacific Mills and acquired by Donald Trump in 1996, is an annual international beauty contest run by the Miss Universe Organization with its headquarter moved to New York City from Los Angeles in 1998.
According to the organizers, the Miss Universe contest is more than a beauty pageant: women aspiring to become Miss Universe must be intelligent, well-mannered, and cultured. Delegates also participate in swimsuit and evening gown competitions. The final five will answer a final question to decide the winner.
The winner is assigned a one year contract with the Miss Universe Organization, going overseas to spread messages about the control of diseases, peace, and public awareness of AIDS.
Aside from the main winner and her runners-up, special awards are also awarded to the winners of the Best National Costume (Fonthip Watcharatrakul from Thailand of this year), Miss Photogenic (Fonthip Watcharatrakul from Thailand of this year), and Miss Congeniality (Jesinta Campbell from Australia of this year). Miss Congeniality is chosen by the delegates themselves. In recent years, Miss Photogenic has been chosen by popular internet vote (the winner used to be chosen by media personnel covering the event).
