The biggest problem I have in speaking in public (or private, for that matter) is when I talk on a subject that is emotionally intense for me. I feel myself starting to choke up and I have to fight back tears. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to control this? I know it’s easy to suggest that I avoid those subjects, but that’s not a solution. The subjects I speak about are personal experiences and they are the focus of my talks.

I don’t say this very often, but that is truly a very good collection of tips. If someone acts on those tips, they will indeed do very well in their presentation.

If I may, slight addition to #4: if you are nervous, “borrow some confidence” from someone who, in your estimation, would never in a zillion years be nervous in that situation.

This is called “emulation” and simply makes direct and conscious use of an otherwise subconscious process of taking on behaviors from people around us.

Note: emulation is NOT imitation!
